A restless mind that won’t shut down at night

You might discover the answer to your stress and anxiety in your sleep!!! Most people don’t realize this, but a very common cause of many mental problems including stress and anxiety is lack of sleep or rather, lack of quality sleep. If you need more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, or if your sleep is interrupted often and you have difficulty in falling asleep again, then read on.
Lucky for us (not so lucky for him though) filmmaker Alan Berliner has struggled with sleep disorders and has even made a documentary WIDE AWAKEiconon this topic.

“A brilliantly edited blend of the hilarious and deeply personal, WIDE AWAKEiconweaves hundreds of archival film clips, consultations with sleep specialists, an overnight stay at a sleep lab, conversations with family members, home movies, dream visualizations,….”

The 400 blows! 400 drug free products - Part 1 (Mechanical products)

This is not about Truffaut’s infamous film ‘The 400 Blows’. Rather this is going to be a multipart series of posts which will highlight one stress relief therapy or approach in each post. Drugs and western medication are by no means the last word on healing and there are many more avenues and approaches that can work wonders depending on the case at hand.
This first post in this series will focus on the use of electro mechanical gadgets and products to provide relief. Do mechanical stress relief products have any role to play in a problem that seems to be in the ‘mind’?
The answer to this question lies in understanding the complex relationship between the mind and the body. Continue reading →

He who controls the heart controls the stress

Firstly my apologies for the use of the masculine gender. It was too tempting to twist the old saying which originates from the times when men ruled the world (well, almost).

We have all heard about how stress, panic and anxiety make the heart beat faster. But now more than a decade long research has led to the conclusion that the reverse may also be possible.

If you were somehow able to see your heart rhythms and were able to control these rhythms then you are likely to directly affect the whole body and relieve yourself from the effects of stress. A shift in heart rhythms may not seem important but in fact it creates a favorable cascade of neural, hormonal and biochemical events that benefit the entire body. The stress relief effects are both immediate and long lasting.

But how do you control your heart rhythms? Till very recently you couldn’t. But the company that has done more than 15 years of scientific validation and research into this phenomena shows you how.

A book and a DVD on how to overcome shyness, social anxiety and fear of public speaking.

Fear of speaking in front of an audience can cause tremendous stress for some people. The symptoms are easy to recognize - quaking voice, lump in the throat, knocking knees and a pounding heart. This syndrome is also an indication of shyness in public. Can this dread and anxiety of public speaking be overcome?

To overcome this fear it is important to understand the reason for this fear. There are several reasons for this fear.

Probably the most important among them is fear of rejection! What if I fail? How will I face xyz? I will be branded as a failiure for life.

Another reason is Continue reading →

Signs and symptoms of stress

Signs of Stress

Signs of Stress

To take the second question first: no one will persuade me that, for the average individual in a Western country, modern living is more stressful than it was for his parents or his grandparents. We all have our private difficulties and sorrows, but at the present time, the average man’s expectations for long life and good health are greater than ever before. In fact, we are now at a stage where certain illnesses are the result of affluence rather than deprivation: for example, overeating leads to obesity, hypertension and heart-disease; excessive smoking to lung cancer; and excessive drinking to alcoholism. We may persuade ourselves that we have fundamental worries, but many of today’s problems come nowhere near the life-and-death level of those experienced by previous generations. So, I take more than a little convincing that mental illness is due to the increased pace of modern life

What have panic remedies and digg got in common?

Both can be used to solve stress, anxiety and panic disorders. Today I am going to discuss the impact of digg (yes, the wonderful web 2.0 site) and it’s role in stress management and relief. Can social websites like digg solve real mental health problems of real people? Some people might not see the connection readily, but it’s very much there. I will also briefly explain some digg strategies to manage stress. I will leave the specific techniques and strategies for another post. In this post I will just touch upon the broad connection between digg and stress relief. Here it is:

Stress can mess with your bowels

46.3% of participants with panic disorder also had Irritable Bowel syndrome (IBS). This is what a study published in the Annals of Clinical Psychiatry says.

If that is not enough look at this: According to a study published in The American Journal of Medicine, upto 90% of people seeking treatment for IBS have one or more psychiatric problems.

IBS “is a common disorder of the intestines that leads to crampy pain, gassiness, bloating, and changes in bowel habits.”
People with IBS may experience constipation; diarrhea; or both.
People with IBS also may experience the urge to move the bowels but be unable to do so. Severity of the symptoms of IBS vary. Some people have mild IBS while others may be disabled by it.

If diarrhea or constipation is worsened by stress and anxiety it’s time to see a doctor. If you have been diagnosed with IBS and it seems to worsen when you are stressed you can try the IBS stress kit. It offers a comprehensive approach to controlling IBS that worsens with stress.
